Do some of the calories in olive oil cook off?

My mom is positive that as you cook with the olive oil, some of the calories are 'cooked' off. Is that even possible? Is it true?Do some of the calories in olive oil cook off?
No, unfortunately it's not true. Extra virgin olive oil is taken from the first ';squeeze'; and contains less fat than virgin olive oil. However, all olive oils will partially solidify at room temperature. Which means it's doing this in your arteries too. These fats contain the calories, and cannot be cooked out.

I learned this in nursing school (nutrition class), but anyone is welcome to check my facts. The only healthy oil is canola, because it is never solid at room temperature. Olive oil is generally 5% fat, while canola is 3%. Also, cooking olive oil kills any healthy nutrients it contains. You can, however, get nutrients from olive oil if it is used in a vinegarette dressing (uncooked).Do some of the calories in olive oil cook off?
all oil seems to some extent to cook off, however olive oil is good for you. Italians are healthy because they brush olive oil on everything in sight and even dunk their bread in it. I wouldn't worry about olive oil if I were here, it's the best she can get.
Hi-

No.

Calories do not cook off unless you destroy the food by burning it up completely.

Most oils pretty much have the same number of calories per tablespoon, etc.

Olive oil has so many health benefits but they are changed by heat. Best to use it for salads and other cold foods. Try other oils that don't change with heat, like coconut oil. Also use minimal oil in cooking, like stir-frying. Some of the oil can be replaced with other liquid, like soy sauce or broth.

Hope this helps.
No, if you cook with olive oil, it's stay the same, it doesn't go away, the calories stay the same.
nope lol I wish this were true of lots of food can u imagine I am cooking everything so absolutely no calories.. good thought but NOPE
She shouldn't be worried about the calories in olive oil. The health benefits far outweigh any worry about calories. Olive oil is full of the kind of fat your body needs. Your mother needs to learn to read up on these things and get facts.

And do not listen to Lantana, she is really grossly misinformed.
Nope, the calories don't cook off. The olive oil is usually absorbed by whatever it is you'r e cooking. That may be why she thinks they're 'cooked off'.
In cooking the oil is not heated to the point it would vaporize if it did so the food would not taste very good, the vapors you see coming from the cooking food are mostly just steam.

    1. While many people want to know how many calories are in olive oil, research finds that not all calories are necessarily equal.
