So, I got this craving for some over easy eggs about an hour ago.
The only cooking oil I could find was olive oil.
Can you use olive oil to fry an egg?
Also, the expiration date has apparently been torn off the bottle.
So, maybe it's old? Anyone know of a way to tell?
%26amp; if it is expired, is it still safe to use?
The bottle's still sealed; never been opened.
10 points to best answer :)
Thanks.Cooking with (possibly) expired olive oil?
Sometimes it's hard to distinguish rancid olive oil from a peppery olive oil IE ';Tuscan'; oil.
Anyway, that's a long story.
Taste and smell the oil.
If it's peppery( that's desirable and don't confuse it with being spoiled).
Rancid will have a very off odor.
As long as the oil wasn't left in direct sunlight( like in a window) it should be fine.
( BTW, this will not harm you or make you sick even if it's a little off).
Usually olive oil is good for 3 years and sometimes more but 2 years if the preferred time to use it by.
Use it!Cooking with (possibly) expired olive oil?
1. How long have you had the bottle?
Open the bottle and smell it- if it smells rancid then use it for oiling hinges etc! because cooking with it will leave a bad taste- OIL never really gets bad! think about the below
You buy a bottle of olive oil in july of 2008 with a date of expiry say-1st Dec 2008- you start using it in August- you are one person ! You surely will not be able to use all the oil by Dec 2008 does it mean you have to throw it out?
Oil can never really spoil- Yes it can get rancid ( a stale smell) So go ahead and use it- I personally do not like to use olive oil to fry an egg, but yes you can as long as you don't get it all smoking - I know many people who like to fry an egg with frilly sides- Yuk! but each to their taste-
Olive oil expiration date:
2 years from manufacture date (After this time, color or flavor may be affected, but product is still generally safe to consume.) From this website:

Yah I fry my eggs in olive oil all the time because I'm alergic to milk so i use that. I wouldn't worry about the olive oil it should be fine just don't use a whole lot of it. good luck!
I ALWAYS use olive oil to fry eggs. It is healthier for your heart. Use only a little or you will have an oily egg. Just enough to coat the pan. If it is unopened then it should be fine. But open and smell it just in case.Good eats!
I would taste the olive oil and see if it is rancid. If not you should be good to go. I dont see why you cant use olive oil to cook an egg.
I dont think that stuff can expire...if it smells fine, it probably is
